Joe Riché of Demiurge's "Typha" Installed on Denver’s West Colfax Avenue

"Typha," a new series of two twenty-foot tall stainless steel and resin sculptures, is standing tall in Denver, CO along the country’s longest continuous commercial street: Colfax Ave.
"Typha" Original Concept DrawingThe two sites are located at Irving St./Zenobia St. at West Colfax Ave. on Denver’s "Gateway to the Rockies," which takes travelers from the plains to the mountains. Joe Riché harkened back to the icon of Colfax Ave. when creating this work for the West Colfax Business Improvement District.

"Typha" Installation - Feb 2012Working with high volume resin castings, Demiurge’s challenge in fabricating Typha was that the resin had a tendency to crack under the high temperatures associated with the curing process. Always up for a production challenge, even with their own art, Demiurge solved the issue by working with their resin vendor's chemist to develop a formula that could withstand the temperatures created during the curing process in addition to submerging the castings in water to further control the curing temperature.

The West Colfax BID promotes business expansion, investment and development and sponsors improvements to the ROW to recast West Colfax Avenue as Denver's sustainable Main Street. To learn more about their work, click on the link or call 303-623-3232.

In-House 3D Laser Scanning Takes Sculpture Fabrication to New Levels

Once attained only through strategic partnerships with companies that owned expensive 3-dimensional scanning technologies, today, Demiurge LLC is just one of a few public art and sculpture production studios that have brought 3D scanning in house.

Image from Demiurge's 3D scanner. With 3D scanners on site, Demiurge can save clients time and money by transferring artists’ maquettes directly into our 3D CAD programs. More than that, our use of 3D technology increases the quality of the finished work on all levels.

Our ability to precisely recreate and refine our artists’ visions and then produce them at any scale has helped Demiurge become a leader in the public art and sculpture production market.

3D technology has enabled the Demiurge team to significantly reduce labor in all areas of sculpture production. For many competing companies, it can take weeks to create drawings for fabricators to work from. Once the concept is complete, Demiurge provides complete concept, construction and structural design, along with photo-realistic renderings.

Demiurge also partners with KL&A Structural Engineers to provide the best materials and methods to maintain the artist's vision at all scales.

Demiurge Completes Alaska Sculpture for Osman Akan

Fabrication is complete on a new sculpture by Turkish born, New York artist Osman Akan for the Crime Detection Laboratory in Anchorage, Alaska. The sculpture includes 300 squares of stainless steel and dichroic glass panels that hang from a 20 foot tall brushed stainless steel structure.

From its concave and convex surfaces to the orientation of its structure, the entire artwork is formed by the daily and yearly cycles of the Sun in the particular location of the Alaska Crime Detection Laboratory. Much like the shifting colors of the seasons, the artwork also changes its appearance by reflecting and refracting sunrays, and by the observation angle of its audience.

If you’ve ever been to the Denver Botanic Gardens, you may have seen a similar design growing out of the parking structure’s atrium, Akan’s Albedo, which Demiurge also fabricated and installed in 2010.
